Communities thrive when they elect people who have practiced the art of consensus-building and who possess a temperament for cooperation. Vermillion is no different. That is why I’m proud to support Kevin O’Kelley for Mayor of Vermillion.
As a member of the Vermillion City Council for 16 years, I served with four different mayors. The council always worked best when it worked collaboratively to give clear direction to our city staff. Over the last 6–7 years, I have noted Kevin’s willingness to take on big problems and work those problems through clear communication and consensus decision-making. In particular, his work for USD, as the campus point-person during the COVID pandemic, demonstrated his desire to move moderately during times when facts were unknown or blurry. During that time, many campus members took strident positions for and against masking, distancing, and other contested measures. Kevin listened and supported reasonable responses that kept the disease under control and kept the university up and running. Since then, he has embraced a new role as active Vermillion citizen, volunteering for a number of boards and running for public office. This is someone who shows up, contributes, and strengthens Vermillion without fanfare.
If elected, Kevin will bring his collaborative spirit, energy, and commitment to practical, forward-looking priorities to the mayor’s office. His desire for thoughtful growth, housing affordability, and improved transit reflects an appreciation for Vermillion’s small‑city charm, while also understanding that even a hidden gem like ours must prepare for the demographic changes already reshaping similar communities. His approach will center on partnerships with the members of the city council, VCDC, and community to ensure that the unique character of our town remains.
That contrast matters. Vermillion deserves leadership that brings people together. Too often in recent years, we have seen a mayor’s office less focused on shared progress, and more comfortable with unilateral decisionmaking than with open dialogue. Kevin represents a refreshing shift — someone who listens first, acts thoughtfully, and understands that good governance is a team effort. That openness is exactly what Vermillion needs right now. It’s the kind of leadership that builds trust, strengthens neighborhoods, and ensures that every voice has a place in shaping our future.
Kevin O’Kelley is running for Vermillion. And that’s why I am proud to endorse him.

I've known Kevin O'Kelley for several years and have always found him to be intelligent, well-informed on the issues facing Vermillion, and a generous spirit. I attended his announcement several weeks ago and was deeply impressed by his praise for what our city has built, as well as his vision for addressing current challenges and creating new possibilities for our future.
